Tips for Using Zoom

  • If you have trouble joining a Zoom meeting or lose your connection to a meeting, try connecting again.
  • Your video will be off when you first join a meeting so people can’t see you.  Turn your video on by clicking “Start Video” at the bottom left of your screen or answering yes when prompted to turn on your video.  When you want to turn off your video click “Stop Video.”
  • You will be muted when you first join the meeting so people can’t hear you.  Wait for the host to unmute you.  If the meeting allows people to mute and unmute themselves, move your pointer to the mute/unmute button at the bottom left of your screen.
  • It is always best to mute yourself when you are not speaking.
  • Click the “Chat” button at the bottom center of your screen to write or read text messages shared by participants.  You are invited to share greetings and words of affirmation with each other.
  • Click the “Participants” button at the bottom center of your screen to view a list of all participants which will appear to the right of your screen.
  • To ask a question, find your name in the “Participants” and raise the “hand” beside your name to be recognized and unmuted.
  • To view everyone in the video section (limited to 24 per page on computer, less on tablets and iPads) press the “Gallery View” located in the upper right on a MAC or PC. (iPad swipe left to view other participants)
  • To change the view to “Speaker” (whoever is speaking) click in the same area to switch between Speaker and Gallery views.
  • If you are using an external camera and/or microphone be sure to plug them in before opening the Zoom application.
  • Only 1 microphone and speaker system should be active per physical location to avoid feedback.
